Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) has signed a deal with EDF Energy to buy all of its UK electricity needs from renewable sources up to March 2020.
The car manufacturer’s supply is backed by the Renewable Energy Guarantees of Origin (REGO), meaning a proportion of EDF Energy’s certified renewable energy is ring-fenced specifically for the company.
Ian Harnett, executive director of human resources and global purchasing and JLR, said: “Our aim is to give our customers assurance that the company’s electricity will come from renewable sources: those being in addition to the solar array at our Engine Manufacturing Centre in Wolverhampton, one of the largest rooftop installations in Europe.”
The 5.8MW installation was completed in 2014, generating around 30% of the engine manufacturing centre’s annual energy requirements.
In addition the company has also invested heavily in reducing the energy consumption of its manufacturing facility in Solihull, which saw an LED retrofit programme carried out that is expected to generate annual savings of £750,000.
Harnett continued: “Our future is low-carbon, clean and efficient. Our programme to reduce our burden on the National Grid doesn’t end here: we seek continual improvements, both in how we can reduce energy consumption further and how to minimise our carbon emissions.”
The company has also cut the energy per vehicle produced by more than 38% compared to 2007 in its UK manufacturing, while new buildings are designed to achieve the highest sustainability standards.
